Salsa Episode 7 : Double-Hand turn and the Tai-Flip
Well, we have another Episode of Addicted 2 Salsa. Another shot at Hotel Fort Des Moines (Iowa for those who are wondering where we are from). We teach you a simple double-handed turn using the same principles as leading a right turn — and then teach you a slick little combo for switching hands as a starter for any other combos you might learn in your life! Again, sorry for the low-budget filming (we do accept donations)!
I have been asked to put out the word that an organization is requesting opinions on which Salsa DJs in Iowa you like the best! There are new salsa events being created and THEY would like your opinions on who do you think would be the best DJ.
We all have gone to most of the events here in Iowa, and have probably heard most of the DJs play. You can voice your opinions here (comments), or in the forums or as last resort, send us an email at apersaud@gmail.com
The DJs being considered are Henry, Sergio, Raphael and Julian. If you are a DJ and would like to be considered as well, please contact Addicted2Salsa.com using the contact form.
Salsa Episode 6: The Open-Break, Switch, and Combo Starter
Ok, another episode we shot "at location". Yes, we are a low-budget podcast. We are doing this for all of you who really want to learn. We love teaching you what we know to hopefully get you started.
In this episode we review the open-break and work through it. It is a very important move if you need to gather some initial momentum for future combos. We also show you how to switch places using an open-break (very simple stuff), and then, a small little combo starter for the future combos that you might do from an open-break.
Well, Jennifer Lopez appeared on The Tonigth Show, with Jay Leno promoting one of her movies. This movie is basically the life and tragedy of the Puerto Rican salsa singer, Hector Lavoe. For those who are new to the salsa scene and music, Hector Lavoe, known by his nicknames “El Cantante” (The Singer) and “La Voz” (The Voice), was a salsa singer in the 70’s (the golden era of salsa), who sang with a lot of high profile names such as Willie Colon and many others under the Fania brand record label. It was he who really and truly defined the salsa sound that we listen to today.
According to Lopez, Marc Anthony will be playing Hector Lavoe in the movie ‘El Cantante’ (2006), while she will be playing Hector’s wife. In addition, Lopez is now going back to Puerto Rico to finish filiming the film and it might actually be distributed all over the US as a major motion picture. (I personally hope this is true).
For those who might not known, this will probably be the major motion picture version of the play named “Who Killed Hector Lavoe”… but that is not for sure since the movie is named ‘El Cantante’.. but of course, we all know he dies anyways…
It is interesting to note that because of the new movie that is coming out, a new website has been created about the famous singer: http://www.hectorlavoe.com
After such a long hiatus, we are back! We have received your emails requesting a more longer beginner lesson, so here you have it. In this episode we review the basic front-and-back salsa step (different angles), the side-to-side break, the right turn and partnering. Hopefully this helps many of you get started in salsa dancing!
You can talk, get music recommendations, ask about nightclubs, ask an instructor a dance question…. and much much more. This is to make the salsa community larger — for people who are always trying to find other people to go to places and/or go latin dancing. All these resources are for you, so you can stay engaged and motivated in salsa!
Need a ride to Chicago Salsa Congress? Need to get some El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico songs? Want to know if a nightclub in Iowa is worth driving 35 miles for? Its hopefully all here! The website is: http://forums.addicted2salsa.com
Well, its a new year, so I bought all the songs in this album, and I have to say — they are a great collection of the best stuff from 2005! If you are looking for some of the best salsa hits of 2005, check out this album on the iTunes music store!
For those DJs, needing the latest in salsa hits to play at the clubs (HINT! HINT!), please check out this album, so you can have a larger, more ‘salsa danceable‘ collection. The songs must be owned by any salsa dancer because they are legendary classics known by everyone.
Mi Desengaño (originally by Roberto Roena), Indestructible (originally by Ray Barreto) and Fuego en el 23 (originally by Sonora Ponceña) (sorry, can’t make the n with tilde) These are classics that EVERY true salsa dancer knows about.. they are just that ubiquitous. You will know if you are at a GREAT salsa nightclub with a DJ that REALLY knows salsa if you hear any of these songs. They are just that great! Now, my only wish, is if they would play more Héctor Lavoe songs in Iowa! (hint, hint).
