This is probably one of my favorite routines to watch (and no I'm not being biased because this is the dance company I belong to) :-). This is the Majesty In Motion Professional Dance Team (San Diego, CA) - probably one of the best dance companies southern California. This is routine (codenamed: Triangle routine) has a great song that might not seem like a salsa song, but it does have a clave beat to it, and it works well with the outfits and the marks in the choreography. This video is of the routine being performed at the LA Salsa Congress (also known as the West Coast Salsa Congress). Enjoy! MajestyInMotion celebrated their 4th anniversary in Nov. 2006.
Well, now to showcase some of the best talent that the state of Iowa has, here is the SalsaIowa Professional Dance Team (salsaiowa.com) performance at the Governor's Inaugural Ball 2007. Its good to see how the talent in Iowa has grown. They will be celebrating their 7th anniversary of their dance company. The choreographers are Ruben and Dawn (directors of the professional team), with Josh Davis and Melanie Rivera. I'm not sure the names of the last couple so hopefully someone can submit them too. You can find more info at the website: salsaiowa.com .
Finally, a 1st place video well deserved. I saw this performance at the San Francisco salsa congress 2006 and it was just spectacular. This is from Jason Molina's group (who he is from Puerto Rico). This is Kelvin Hernandez & Licelott Maldonado representing Venezuela & Puerto Rico performing and winning 1st place in Las Vegas at the World Salsa Championships 2006. Again, just the aerials are simple breathtaking.
Again, I do not know why they received 3rd place (can't find the 2nd and 1st place videos), but this choreography is amazing. Look at the the hand and leg gestures during the song and how elegantly it is performed. This is salsamania from San Francisco - and as you can tell, they are known for their complicated patterns and EXTREMELY fast footwork. The men's footwork to the speed of the song is crazy (its really really fast).
First Junior and Emily (2nd Place): The most difficult part about this routine (for those who might not know how hard it is to do this) is the fact that you have blazing fast spins, with constant spinning and the HAND CHANGES! Thats what gets to me. You'll see Junior leave contact with Emily, and then pickup her hand while she's spinning again.. and he'll do that multiple times. Simply Amazing!
Now, for the 1st place couple! Oh MY! All the way from downunder - (Salsa is alive and well in Australia!) - here is Oliver Pineda & Luda Kroiter performing probably the smoothest, most clean, and seemless (hand and pattern chagnes are not noticeable) out of the bunch. While everything looks simple, trust me, to get it to that perfection (and especially the turning behind the back in the end) that is DIFFICULT!
Just to let everyone know I have been very busy with work, salsa and a accelerating the progress of the new website (and therefore) have been unable to spend time writing new articles. I hope to back to the regularly scheduled 'program' by next week. If you have any articles you'd like to share, videos or songs you'd like me to post, just send me an email with the information.
Well, to tell you the truth - I've been to many top congresses around the US, and this is by far one of my favorite congresses. The shows are amazing, the instructors that come to this event are some of my favorites, and the social dancers that attend are just the best (and the happiest people).
I'm most likely going to show up to the Chicago Salsa Congress this year, so I hope I get to see all of you at the event. It will be a blast (especially in the cold weather up there). :-)
Now, you might notice that when I’m slow in writing articles - its probably because I’m doing something else on the website (like making a podcast - remember, I do have a day job ). Anyways, I’m pretty happy with this episode because I’m a big fan of listening to live music.
In this episode of Addicted2Salsa podcast, we take a look at some songs performed live during various events, and I’ll give you some tips how to survive dances that are at live events (with a live band). This is because live songs tend to be much longer and different than the songs you practice with.
Well, we have started the New Year, and I decided to share another "oldie-but-goodie" video from back in the day when Salsa was very popular. This video was the New Years Eve Party in 1979 (so basically for 1980) where Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe were singing us off to the New Year. It was broadcast throughout all the televisions in Puerto Rico. Kind of fun to watch and see how they used to do it.
As you all know, I am a HUGE Hector Lavoe fan. With that said, after seeing this trailer for the movie “El Cantante” which is about the life of Hector Lavoe and listening to the music, hearing Marc Anthony sing, and having a rush of memories come back to me.. I literally got shivers and goosebumps. I’m really looking forward for this film. I hope it will unite the salsa community and bring salsa back into the mainstream so others can enjoy it. Marc Anthony stars as salsa legend, Hector Lavoe, alongside real-life wife Jennifer Lopez as “Puchi” (Hector’s Wife). Official Website for El Cantante Movie [Hi Quality Trailer]
