So, here we are again with something short and simple just for you to mix it in to your other moves. Remember, it is not about having multiple long combos, but about putting smaller ones together in different orders. That will keep your moves fresh and keep the ladies guessing what you will do next. Additionally, for those who are thinking about on2, I make a small note for you to pay attention to the counting rhythm when performing the move. Enjoy!
The song used in the episode is “Philadelphia Mambo” by Los Gatos (originally by Tito Puente)

Hi !
Great podcast as always.
Just a little precision for me, a complete beginner :)…
Sorry if this seems stupid : I haven’t tried this combo yet but here you begin crossed-hands then do a cross body lead with turn and the lady ends up with hands still crossed.
However, in the submarine combo, you also start with crossed-hands, do a cross-body-lead with turn but the lady ends up with hands un-crossed this time.
The difference is hidden in the turn?
Nicolas.

Nicolas,
The difference does lie in the turn however, it’s not hidden. As you bring your follow across for the cross-body-lead and begin to turn her, notice his right hand! It never makes it over her head! Instead he rests it on her right shoulder. Had he brought his hand over her head, she would have ended up in the same position as in the Submarine combo! Hope this helps!

i want salsa lessons
Are you guys dancing on-1 or on-2 in the intro?
I think it’s on-2 but I’m a beginner so i don’t know
Hi Andrew, we’re dancing on 2…good call!
Thanks for the quick response!
Hi, I’m new to salsa dancing and I’ve been having some trouble interpreting what my partner wants me to do. Every time he lifts my hand up I think he wants me to turn and then I realize halfway through the turn that that’s not what he wanted me to do. Is there a signal that I should be reading into?
For the record, when I actually take a second to think about it I can interpret it correctly but I’m afraid that I’m taking too much time.
The rule usually is that if you don’t FEEL a lead, you don’t do anything (and keep doing your basic step). Leads should be firm and strong enough that you have no doubt that you should be doing what you are doing (in most cases).
However, I sometimes may raise my hand and push it slightly to turn, just enough that a good dancer knows what I’m asking for. However, if it happens that I dance with a partner and she doesn’t turn, I understand that I have to be firmer in the next lead. It usually takes the lead about 2-3 tries to make adapt to the partner’s type of ‘following’ style. Some girls require a light lead (experts), other require a stronger one (beginners). However, don’t think you are an expert and try to be a light follow by ‘predicting’ what the lead wants - that is called ‘backleading’.
Hey Anthony , thanks for showing the pattern On2 as well. Finally I can notice the difference you always talk about with on1 and on2. The feeling you get is way different. I can finally say I have always danced on1 (i didnt even know how i danced before LAWL). I guess On2 would be more intuitive to grip if you dance it with the cuban (rumba) clave (2-3) .
Thanks again , props to you and your partner instructor.
Hey guys, I know little to nothing about salsa and I saw your videos, actually this is the first one I saw on Youtube, and then of course came over to your site.
Do you have a way that a beginner, could start with your videos. I know the basic step, cross body turns but that’s all.
I guess what I am asking is that if you have your videos organized in any manner?
Thanks for the great tips
You may want to start with Video 1 and work your way up. There is no organization, but some of the basis are covered in the earlier videos. You can see all the videos (and download them) at http://salsapodcast.org
Great site! I do have a couple of questions. I am a beginner of on 2 dancing and the instructional videos that you are talking about on your podcast, are they on 2, or do I need to look at other videos. I am also flat footed (no arch whatsoever) and I would like to know how you overcame this problem and dance, and any suggestions.
Dancing on1/on2 doesn’t matter when it comes to the videos, since you can just convert the counts to on2 timing. We dance the intro on2 and do the explanation on1 (since most beginners dance on1).
As far as being flat-footed. I bought some better shoes that do not have a heel (which helps me bring my center of gravity a little closer), and I got some insole arches.
