Reasons Why You Should be Dancing Salsa Right Now!

Salsa Dancing.  What is it that makes it popular today?  Why is it that people who salsa seems to be happier, in better shape and in a better mood compared to others?  From these questions we see that there are two major roles dancing salsa plays in people’s lives: they are healthier and they have a great social life.

We all know, having heard or read somewhere, about the health benefits of dancing.  Here are some of the more prominent ones to be considered:

  • It’s a great cardio activity that is fun; it’s a lot easier to spend three hours dancing than it is to spend forty five minutes on the treadmill.
  • You burn 450 calories per hour while dancing.  Isn’t that amazing?
  • Your balance and posture improves.
  • You loose weight.
  • Your flexibility increases.
  • It helps develop better circulation.
  • You will have better coordination.
  • You gain long-lasting energy as your metabolism increases.
  • It helps you work through or reduce other major health problems (e.g., depression).

So if these reasons alone aren’t enough to understand why people pick up salsa dancing, let’s analyze the social aspect of it.  We all come from different walks of life; some better than others, but for the most part the one thing people mutually seek is the feeling of being important, of having a purpose and belonging somewhere (e.g., to a community or group of people with common interests or goals). That is where dancing comes in: the means to a better end, building confidence and a sense of self that will drastically improve your quality of life. So how does salsa dancing help fulfill this ultimate goal?

Here it goes: Salsa dancing…

Inspires in you a positive attitude towards your daily life. Okay, I understand that you don’t want to become the greatest dancer, but dancing helps shift and balance your mental state to a positive one. The best way to achieve this is by doing it often. Since dancing and the social contact uplift the spirit, if done regularly, it helps your life to become that way (positive, happier). Your daily activities become more pleasant as your overall mood is uplifted through dancing salsa. No wonder people say that dancing changes lives. I’ll say it better: “Dancing changes attitudes; positive attitudes change lives.”

Helps you to meet new friends. So here are a couple of questions for you: How many long-lasting friends did you make the last time you went to a social gathering? Or a bar (the bartender doesn’t count)?  Here is the answer: NONE. Salsa dancing is the perfect social ground for new friendships. You know why? Because from the go, you already know you both have something in common, something that you can talk about. You also get to dance face to face (no offense hip hop), and are able to exchange a small conversation as you dance. This contact is the perfect beginning for a more developed conversation, which usually involves more people. And guess what, these people also like salsa. Next logical step: Let’s get together to have a barbecue!

And from this the next common thing to happen is….dundundunduuuun….

You meet a special someone. How nice is the fact that you both love dancing and can share a favorite activity from the start?  Forget about the awkward first date, and think about that next time you go dancing! As a bonus, that person is likely well groomed and in great shape! Yahoo!

You increase your self-esteem and confidence. If you are shy, this is the safest place to interact with people.  The salsa community is an open and extremely friendly one.  From the moment you walk in the door, you will feel welcomed – it’s that easy.  As you learn how to dance, you find yourself in a situation that is fun, open, and energizing.  Don’t forget about the exhilarating Latin music!  Watching yourself lose weight, learn how to move well on the dance floor, and constantly improve is an enormous boost in confidence!  As a girl, there’s nothing more satisfying than having guys constantly asking you to dance (and more!).  As a guy, being able to go up to the sexy girl you never would have dreamed of talking to and asking her to dance is an accomplishment that will change your world.  Now you will have the boldness and courage to ask any girl to dance, and to be the spotlight on the dance floor!  This sense of accomplishment and self-security is something that you will take with you from the salsa club into your daily life; you will be able to watch as the wonders that come from dancing salsa spread through your life, turning everything they touch to gold!

So here they are before you: the greatest reasons why people pick up salsa dancing, as their life-changing hobbies.  These are their reasons for doing it; what is your excuse not to?
All you have to do is sign up for any local salsa class (they are everywhere!), and you will thank me later when I’m in the crowd watching you tear it up on the dance floor.  Have a happy journey through the world of salsa dancing!

  1. 1 The Real Anthony Persaud

I’d like to add the little fact, that if it wasn’t for salsa, I wouldn’t know what my social life would be. I was walking downtown last night from a salsa dance club and I looked into some of the other bars. I felt that it is harder to meet new people or groups “out of the blue” in those types of scenes than in the salsa scene when there is a specific protocol you can follow to interact with strangers (asking them politely to dance). Without salsa, I’m not sure how I would ever know how to meet women.

  2. 2 Your True Mateo

I think back to my first time at a salsa club, there weren’t many people there, maybe 20 at most, but I was scared to death and almost walked out saying “this is a stupid idea…”

The fantastic part about this is I think a vast majority of the people I know would have the same feeling, therefore, we start on equal footing. Since then, I’ve watched as the club has grown to over 200 some nights, as people come in and connect with other people based on a remarkable premise - “Hey look, we’re both human”.

Once you get going, how you progress and your “stature” so to speak is completely based on you and your dedication to the art, not your personality, not how much money you make, not what people outside think you are. It’s a chance to meet on common ground with all sorts of people, and even better, to understand in a tangible way something many people forget so easily. We’re not so very different after all.

I’ve never been to a club or congress, in the transition phase from ballroom to nightclub dancing, but the social aspect of all dancing is great for cutting across phobias and walls. I’ve yet to meet a complete tool that is a serious dancer. The more nice people I surround myself with the better off I will be.

  4. 4 Don

I’m with Anthony. I hardly went to clubs because I really had no skills. But with Salsa, I now go to clubs on my own. Met lots of great girls that are either great to dance with or provide great feedback. I’ve also made a couple of guy friends as well through my hot “girl friend”.

  5. 5 Elaine

I’ve been into salsa all my life but I decided to go into the “salsa scene” about 4 months ago. My reason, at that moment, was one and one only… I was struggling with depression. Salsa, has been magic for me and I truly can’t understand why “SALSA” is not prescribed by doctors. Seriously!!!

So far, Salsa, from classes to the physical aspect of it has done wonders in my life. Oh, and the social aspect of dancing has opened possibilities that once (not so long ago) seem impossible. It’s funny. When I started reading the list at the beginning of this article I felt like I was being described. First, without even trying Ive weight and I now feel the need to stay fit and take care of my diet in order to look at my best in the tight outfits I use to go out ;) Second, I have so much energy that I recently realized I had danced about 4 hours with only 1 or 2 minute breaks between songs. Hahaha I didn’t even noticed it- I wasn’t tired or sleepy!! Additionally, I’ve also made many great friends while having A LOT of fun.

I remember I almost had to battle a panic attack the first time I went to the studio but now I simply feel different; I feel empowered. I realize that there are so many people who might be living the same situation I lived so I would like to end by sharing one final thought… you just need to try Salsa, specially if you are trying to battle depression.

Salsa is the most fun. Having started about 8 moths ago I am really involved in it now. Its a great activity, cool people, and now I can speak Spanish, too.

As a musician, I really appreciate the music and the culture. It’s amazing.
