    Hey everybody!

I’m trying to find a salsa song that starts with a part of Beethoven’s 5th symphony and becomes very fast after that. It’s not cinco salsa by Kizzo Brothers or the thing created by Andre Rieu. Does anybody know the title or, even better, a link to that song?

    Hello Friends,
I was planning a vacation in either Hawaii or Puerto Rico. I was wondering which place would be better for Salsa dancing. I guess probably Puerto Rico but I always wanted to visit Hawaii. Though my aim is not go there for Salsa dancing but just to have fun but I thought that it would be great if I could go out at night for Salsa dancing.

Eh, Ionbluster. Went to a dance competition last Friday and saw some wickedly cool ballroom cha cha. Couldn’t find anything good on YouTube to give it justice.

Just started a college ballroom class on Salsa and Cha -Cha, pretty cool moves for both dances. I thought it would be “fluffy” on the first day. Surprisingly, they dove right in on both accounts and didn’t spend a whole classes on the basic.

Ballroom salsa?! I’m planning on doing DanceSport next summer for the pro-am salsa competition. DanceSport is all ballroom.

Yeah I know with Ballroom Salsa. The class instructor mentioned that they are actually formulating the standards for judging salsa in the traditional three catagories of Bronze, Silver and Gold.
You’ll probably start seeing it on a PBS station at 3AM. (Do you guys have Public Brocasting Stations in Canada?)

On a separate note, now that I consider Cha-Cha and Salsa the same thing it has been neat interchanging both the patterns with each of the two dances.

As a salsera and milongera, I have to say that I don’t think that had any tango influence at all. For something really tango inspired, check this one out… the intro is all tango, but the body of the performance does a decent job incorporating the two incredible and distinct dances.

    Hola ladies,

I started salsa 4 monts ago and im an intermediate level dancer. i used to take 3-4 classes a week and go out clubs atelast twice a week. I got some moves but im not really smooth like the other guys  i see at the dance floor. it doesnt bother me because ill be there soon :) anyhoo my question :  considering you as an advanced or a dancer with lots of salsa experience. how do you all feel about dancing with a guy who is beginner or intermediate level ? i know you all are out there for a fun dancing and sometimes i wonder how the girl would feel about daning with a guy like me after dancing with other hardcore salsa dudes at the same club.. well ofcouse  its a little intmitating for me to watch them do those cool moves. I dont even feel like asking a girl to dance if she is super duper good.  lolz..  looking forward to hear from all the Salseros :-) .. happy dancing !!!

I’m a guy, but I think I can also give you some good advice on this. First of all, you should probably begin your evening by dancing with girls you’ve met during the class. That way, you know you’re dancing with girls your level, and have no reason to be nervous about dancing with them. Second, don’t get nervous about dancing with higher level girls. They might not enjoy dancing with you as much as they would with more advanced dancers, but don’t worry about that now. You should worry about getting better first. Advanced girls will help you do that. Offer to dance with them. The worst that could happen is that they will refuse ;)

You know there are nice people and rude people at every level. I have been happy to dance with guys that are at a lower level than I am up till recently when one of them caused me to get my toe stomped on and broken because he wasn’t aware of what he was doing. THAT, my safety, has made me think twice about dancing with beginner guys. Your first job is to make sure we are safe on the dance floor cause we can’t see behind us, and not to lead moves that we might get hurt in if you foresee a collision happening. Having said that, some of my most memorable dances have not necessarily been the ones with expert guys, but the ones with men who may have had simple moves but were present, connected with me in playing back and forth with the music and the movements, and really enjoyed dancing. We gals pretty much all love to spin but don’t assume that a movement packed aerobics workout in a dance is the best way to go – that’s fun once in a while but it gets sweaty hot on the dance floor dance after dance. Have confidence in the moves you do use, use them in changing patterns, try to style a bit and play with the music as you dance, connect with your partner and show her a good time, don’t be intimidated, do what you do well with passion and we will enjoy and appreciate you for it, and possibly even remember you more than the other guys. Enjoy!

      gracias for the replies :-)

i used to say the excuse that im a beginner before dancing with someone but nowadays i just ask and dance and say it at the end if i felt i didnt do good :P sometimes i get comments that i got some cool moves … yay !! :-]]

Isis : “some of my most memorable dances have not necessarily been the ones with expert guys” that was good to hear. Sorry to hear about your toe, yup that does make lots of sense ..

thanks again for the replies and i would love to hear more comments :-)

I’m just going to restate 2 things that have already been mentioned:

      1. Take the turns you already know how to do and smooth them out, so that you are able to lead just about anyone in those turns.

      2. Take a break from learning 1001 turns, and take a little time focusing on styling – with your basic, and during your turn patterns.

I seriously know about 10 turns solidly, but I put so much style in my dancing that both women and men think I’m a much better dancer than I really am.

Salsa “levels” are usually done according to what turns you know. In those terms, I’m probably a high beginner, with a few intermmediate turns.

When I tell that to people, they think I’m being displaying false modesty.

I keep trying to tell them that what they like about my dancing is the style I put into it – not a wide collection of awesome turns.

They still seem to say, “yeah, right.”

But in any event, I enjoy knowing the ladies like to dance with me and watch me dance, and the guys think I’m doing great things.

Great advice by everyone here. Khalid D…man I sure coulda used your advice…when I first started. I’ve been “salsa dancing” for years…but my true salsa journey didn’t start till about a year ago when I started taking On2 lessons. Now for me, my journey had been difficult because I didn’t have a partner to practice with. I didn’t get the nerve to even go to a social till about 4-5 months of lessons. Then you go to your first social and your blown away. And I had the intimidation feeling as speedrace. And even till about a few weeks ago I had that same feeling. What changed for me was when I attended the NY Salsa Congress. I just dove in and danced with women of all levels. It was refreshing to dance with a woman who had just finished doing a performance on stage and was now having an enjoyable dance with me. Yea I messed up a few times. But we just smiled and enjoyed the music. If you can attend a Congress even for one night. GO! It will take you to the next level.

That’s a whole lot of practice and repetition, if you keep that up you will find your way.

I like Khalid and Isis’ points about playing with the music and style. They are both talking about the same thing. I dance best when I stop thinking about the steps and am just listening/reacting to the music.

I don’t mind dancing with any level of a lead if his timing is correct. Many times it isn’t, which is completely frustrating, but if it is, even the few basic moves can be enjoyable! And a guy can make the dance enhanced with some styling and flair and be suave and try to make a good connection with the follower and not worry about how he compares to the more advanced leaders.
I have found that dancing with some advanced dancers can be harsh if they are judgmental on who they are dancing with and worried about how they look on the dance floor verses some mid level dancers who try their best and make a really good connection and make the dance fun. Even with some beginners, I’ve really enjoyed seeing their eyes light up when they feel like they just did something right and I like being a part of that, too!
So, if you focus on having proper technique, proper timing and add some of your own “flava” to the dance, us followers should be able to enjoy you no matter what level of dance we currently are in. :)

    Hey everyone!
I went to a salsa club this week (yay!), and the band there played a fast salsa song in Spanish that had the lyrics “aye aye aye” in it. Now I tried looking it up on google and youtube, and it seems like there is an old traditional Mexican song with these lyrics – but it’s not the one I’m looking for…any ideas?
    Thanks everyone!

    Hi guys!

Here’s my latest freestyle/demo of Bachata Moderna in Sydney, Australia.

I know some people won’t like it as Bachata Moderna is more showy than the traditional Bachata. But, I’m in a quest to push Bachata and take it to next level, as it has happen that many dancers, we learnt the basics of bachata and then they feel that that’s it in Bachata, no need to take more classes or learn more (that happened to me too).

Bachata Moderna is based on the Bachata traditional (1, 2, 3 and hip) and the close connection, but it adds new fundamentals to the dance (Cross on1, on2, on3, cross over, About turn, exit on1). This fundamentals helps you to take your bachata to the next level and create a lot of more combinations and moves.

I’m open for comments, suggestions, after all, we all are in this together, we all love dancing.

For more of Bachata Moderna, check http://www.bachateros.com.au

    Hi all,

Just got into the salsa scene.   I have some questions about the basic step.  In the instructional video, Anthony says to pause on the 4 and 8 counts…but when I see them dance afterwards, they don’t pause their feet on the 4 and 8, however they are still in sync with the beat.  What’s going on there?  Do they delay the first and seventh steps?

    Thanks in advance,

    Justine

    • Mark 10:21 am on August 18, 2009Permalink | Reply

There is a pause on the 4 and 8 as far as stepping goes, but that doesn’t mean a good dancer will stop. 4 and 8 are used for weight shifts from one leg to the other, some hip action, or a little kick that adds style and flare. If you’re a beginner, make sure you’re stepping in time to the 1,2,3/5,6,7 and take the pauses on 4 and 8 so that you learn to develop good timing. Make sure your turns are clean and smooth, and make sure your cross-body leads are precise and snappy. Focus on keeping your balance with good posture and control when doing a cross-body with turn. And keep your feet going right to time – 1,2,3/5,6,7.

Once you have enough practice so that all the basics are in muscle memory, so that you don’t have to think about them, your body will know what to do on the 4 and 8.

      People!

I can not resist and do not talk about this outrage .
I fool half a year to collect the long-awaited vacation. Went to the Agency and long selected resort, chosed the hotel Fleur De Lys Mansion, Florida . Of course I would like to go stay a vacation in Rodeway Inn Tybee Island, Georgia , read about it a lot positive feedback, but so far for me it’s expensive.

Location excellent, near everything, the ideas should be OK.
Arrived, arrived at the hotel. And then began: settled half of the day . Rooms full stuffy . Not like in the next Red Roof Inn & Suites Naples, Florida .

Food as in prison, neither vegetables no meat , only the pasta and the sausage. Personnel say bad words.

Hope to be just at Sea . This is the only thing that saved! All the time spent there. And you would have heard my yell roar when to turn on the light I realized that this cockroach , I just do not have monster!!!! The guy then long otpaival me cognac fright I have not experienced ever before. Called Manager, and what do you think he said this bastard? What we have this animal brought to the Park. No, well, normal ? Razrugalis we have everything specifically, it is understandable that the show did not get.

But these good impressions were defaced , where on the last day before departure from the ceiling to us with the man in another bed that is dropped.
So that fear of my bitter experience, never rest to this hotel.

    Tags: Most inspiring dance video

I just have to say that I found my most inspiring video on this very website. It is the 10 minute clip of several men alternately dancing with a woman in the parking lot outside the 2004 Mambo conference. I like to spin and I get a big kick out of watching Fernando Sosa doing multiple spins in concrete in open-toed sandals. The follower changes back and forth between ON1 and ON2 as she changes leaders.

    http://addicted2salsa.com/2007/02/07/salsa-by-burju-hurturk-fernando-juan-matos-etc/

If I could do 2-3 spins like these guys I would have gone to Salsa Heaven!

      Marco 6:29 am on August 6, 2009Permalink | Reply

I totally agree, it is easily one of my top vids. I believe Burju (Hacha y Machete dance co.) is the follow and she left it all on the floor (concrete?) You can see the leads trying to get her a rest towards the end of the dance.

The remixed song is kick @$$ too (Sonido Bestial -Richie Ray y Bobby Cruz.) Does anyone know which version that is?

    • dickda 7:56 am on August 6, 2009Permalink | Reply

Yes, I would like to know that particular version of the song as well. I haven’t been able to find it. About 3:15 minutes into the video, Fernando just nails a 3-turn spin and lifts his foot revealing that he is wearing sandals! He has a nice commentary (in Spanish) on dance in general on YouTube.

Anyone have suggestions for your top 2 or 3 clips?

    • Tom 6:36 am on August 11, 2009Permalink | Reply

Wow – Love the start of the video for the music, and the salsa’s great! Does anyone know if it was a live version? Or if it was mixing fromone track at the start for the first 20 seconds, before Sonido Bestial?

For anyone who started on On1, how much training was required to go to On2? I’m thinking about taking On2 lessons in the fall. But am unsure if it’s sure a question of being able to say with the On2 steps throughout a song, And of cource adjusting CBL for On2. Or is it a bit more complex than that?

    • Madsalsa 9:37 pm on August 4, 2009Permalink | Reply

the amount of training/practice depends on each person. if you’re heavily reliant on muscle memory, then it may take a bit to ‘unlearn’ enough On1 to be comfortable with On2. i’m not aware of any moves being different when dancing On2, but there isn’t much On2 in my city.

      • lonbluster 6:17 pm on August 29, 2009Permalink | Reply

I wouldn’t say muscle memory is very relevant dancing On2. It is more a mental muscle memory due to a great enmeshing with the music. Dancing On2 requires you to adjust continuosly your timing focusing on different instruments continuosly.
Of course muscles memory has its part, but it can be sometimes more an hidrance than helpful. Dancing on2 requires to unbalance your body a lot more than on1 using therefore more and different muscles than on1.
If you can really dance on2 (see clave, conga in this forum) you won’t have any trouble switching to on1 whenever you want. And On1 dancing seen from and on2 perspective is much more good.

    • lonbluster 6:29 pm on August 29, 2009Permalink | Reply

It took me moooore than few months to really say I could dance on2-onClave.
Unlike Cuban style where I was productive after 2 months, on NY Style on2, I though many times during 1 year, I knew how to dance it, but I obviously was wrong many times. Now I know I can dance it because I feel it, no doubt about it, even if some on2 beginner(let’s say 6 months) is telling me I don’t dance it properly. The problem here is to find good teachers, and change many of them.
On2 is about entering into the music, and for this you have to have a basic understanding of how the salsa music is composed; something not necessary on1 and and Cuban.
On2 is the freedom of salsa! Enjoy!

    Hi,

I am trying to find some salsa music based on the musical “West Side Story”.

I am wanting to choreograph a number with the typical Romeo/Juliet (Tony/Maria) meeting and falling in love despite the barriers story.  But primarily for salsa dancing.

I have been able to find one Latin tribute CD by Neuva Manteca, but am trying to find some other options.

Thanks in anticipation for any suggestions.
