    Tags: Begining style

What do you think ’bout this begining style? Should we do like this at the dance club?

    • Don Vaillancourt 7:47 am on May 29, 2009Permalink | Reply

Dance clubs are there to have fun, practice, improve, challenge yourself and even do silly things. If you like doing styles go and do it. It’s all in the mood of the song. I wish I could do that, but my teacher is more focused on fixing my poster first.

In this video you have ballroom chacha – and also by couple dancing tournaments.
Personally I think (as a ballroomdancer) it is really good if you can get this good in what you do but again there is no place in clubs for a dancing style like this – dancing in clubs is for fun as Don said.
But if you want to learn this go for it, it will be a great experience in your dancing – the only thing to do is not to get too stiff for the salsa dancing we like so much.

    Tags: Ending style

It’s said that there must be somet special moves at the ending of the songs (especially in performing dancing). I don’t want to do the dip because my partner is not very light.
Have you ever thought of some beautiful ending style (except dipping)? Please show us! Thank you!

    Tags: Spinning

When should I lead my partner to do single-spin, double-spins or triple-spins? What does the number of the spin depend on?

    • Don Vaillancourt 10:52 am on May 1, 2009Permalink | Reply

My bet is how she reacts to doing one spin. I think that girls who can do multiple spins will.

    • DEVILOFDARKNESS 10:53 pm on May 4, 2009Permalink | Reply

So how will she react? (please tell me if the reaction is like base + acid, acid + salt, base + salt; oh, sorry! That’s because I’m keen on chemistry.)
Mmm, if I dance with someone who smiles all the time (like Julie), how can I know if she reacts?

    • Marie-B 1:03 pm on May 7, 2009Permalink | Reply

Okay guys… here is a woman’s point of view of the spinning question. Way to many guys think that it’s all about the spinning. Which I partly agree with, I mean a good dancer can spin smoothly without pulling on the guy.

But here’s my problem… When guys see I could spin… they use and abuse of the spinning and it just becomes annoying after a while… I think the number of spins depends on the music… And once again I’m bringing this back to being M.U.S.I.C.A.L ( playing with the music) part of dancing is feeling the music. and way to many dancers forget to do this. Devil let me expalin. When it’s romantic song, spinning multiple times doesn’t look or feel romantic at all so it might not be the right time. As for if you make the girl turn once but the girl does this sensually and romantically it will be nice…
GIRLS NEED BREAKS: WE ARE NOT SPINNING MACHINES!!! and we like other moves as well

      Julie 4:19 pm on May 7, 2009Permalink | Reply

I second Marie-B, but to add:

Ability of the follow – start with a double to see how her speed and balance are
Timing – in a fast song, you may not have time for a triple spin. You have to make sure the follow is done spinning (yes, it is your job to give her a cue to stop) so that she is ready to break back either on 1 or if you dance on2, then on 6.

@Devilofdarkness – If she smiles all the time, she may let you know in more obvious ways, like stumbling ;-)

Basically, you first have to consider her ability. You then have to consider timing and musicality. In terms of keeping the follow happy, we generally like a good variety…too much of any one thing does get old.

      Thanks for your reply!
I’ll always remember your sentences, such as:
“We are not spinning machines!!!” (from Marie-B)
“Too much of any one thing does get old.” (from Julie)
And finally I hope all of the leaders remember those sentences ,too.

    Tags: Different stylings

According to me, Anthony has been dancing with 3 women: Stephanie, Melanie and Julie. My partner said that they have different stylings. Therefore, whose styling should she imitate?

I’ve danced with many follows, however I think you mean just in the videos correct?

She should find her own styling by mixing in parts of the styling she likes ( a mixture of the many great dancers in the salsa scene).

    • jovi 1:44 am on April 26, 2009Permalink | Reply

copy from one is called plagiarism, copy from two is called research ;)

    • DEVILOFDARKNESS 5:26 am on April 26, 2009Permalink | Reply

Thanks, after reading 2 comments, I suggest her that she combines Melanie’s styling (her favourite styling) with the … cobra’s action (her favourite animal) and it looks nice.

However, I also like to do some styling, but the videos seem not to show us styling for men.

    Two-handed-hold.
I love the two-handed-hold moves best and I wanna study more about that. Therefore, do anyone think of any strange, new and challenging (even risky) two-handed-hold moves ? Please write to me and tell me what to do. Thank you!

    • Tikka 9:24 am on April 10, 2009Permalink | Reply

Heh. I tend to break my partner’s wrist in Two handed holds. I somehow squeeze too hard involuntarily so she can never turn properly. ;)

    • DEVILOFDARKNESS 10:41 pm on April 10, 2009Permalink | Reply

Mmm, my way to do the two handed hold postion is like this solution:
1-2-3: you raise your hands up and move your right hand below the left hand.
5-6-7: you turn the lady clockwise with both of your hands.
Then you can use the two handed moves to continue.
Do anyone think of any strange, new and challenging (even risky) two-handed-hold moves ? Please write to me and tell me what to do. Thank you!

One of my favourite two handers is the double lock as you can get into it in so many ways, and it can lead to a number of other two handed moves as well. Anthony actually did a really good example here:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsUAJYYT7Jc

Can easily switch into a sombrero/around the world/some other funky stuff on the way out of it too.

Hey check out this move video – Sam & Gabi are focusing on the cross body move element, but there are lots of two hands moves here. These people have also filmed a whole moves video showing a long move sequence done in the cross-hands position. It is not available yet….but soon!
Let me know if this is what you were looking for…

    Height barrier.
Is it difficult to dance with the girl who is taller than me? (Sorry for posting such a stupid question but it’s necessary for me because my height is only 1.66 metres)

    • Tikka 8:12 am on April 8, 2009Permalink | Reply

That’s my height. And I live in the country with the tallest people in the world, where girls average on 1.73 meters!!

My partner is 1.68, so that’s not bad. When I dance with taller girls, I make sure I’m confident and maintain a good posture. Look her in the eye and do NOT apologise for your height, never.

Some figures are a tad more difficult, especially spins, but the thing is: it doesn’t matter how you do it, just do it with confidence and a smile. :)

    • Don Vaillancourt 11:17 am on April 8, 2009Permalink | Reply

I have had problems dancing with girls who are taller, shorter and overweight. It’s a beginner thing. I can now dance with all of them.

I think that when you get comfortable, you can dance in any situation.

Some people even go to the point of using it to their advantage.

Take “Shorty George” Snowden. He made a career out of it, and some say it influenced a number of dance genres.

Whoa! I had been always thinking that no one could help me to solve this problem, anyway, thanks for your enthusiasm!
As you know, I always have problems while dancing with someone taller than me in spinning. You know, they don’t want to incline!:(

When I watched the video which is about 180 and 360 cross body lead with turn, I found out something weird!
It was Julie’s turning. At 15th second, Julie turns with her elbow direction. However, at the 20th second, she turns with her finger direction.
Is there any exact directions for turning in Salsa? How can I make it when I try some cross body lead with the larger degree number? ( 480 or 720)
    Thank you.

    • jovi 3:13 pm on April 5, 2009Permalink | Reply

      turning direction:
if someone stand on the right foot then it is easier to turn clockwise(on left – counterclockwise).

      http://addicted2salsa.com/2009/03/08/beautiful-salsa-dancing-amazing-musicality-and-smoothness/
if you perform the 720 crossbodylead with lady turn … you’ve chosen the right name … i want to see it :)

    • DEVILOFDARKNESS 6:27 am on April 6, 2009Permalink | Reply

Thank you. But that also means that whenever I want to turn a lady, I have to look at her foot, right?

      • jovi 9:16 am on April 6, 2009Permalink | Reply

no, you don’t have to look because when you step with right, girl steps with left.(and vice versa).
problem arises when one of the dancers is at the wrong tempo, so you have to check from time to time this fact(look at her foot).
once you become advanced, you will see on which foot she is standing based on her body movement.
when i was a beginner i looked at foot often. one girl even told me “you would dance much better if you don’t look at my breast all the time.” :) you can say what you want, they won’t belive you where you are realy watching, but i am still thinking to risk look at her foot is better than having an incident and hurt somebody.

    • DEVILOFDARKNESS 8:17 am on April 7, 2009Permalink | Reply

How hard! If I don’t check my footwork, thing may go wrong. If I check my footwork, the girl thinks of me badly! :(
However, how could the girl realize that you look at her b***** all the time when she does a lot of styling when dancing?

      • jovi 10:18 am on April 7, 2009Permalink | Reply

this girl is still dancing with me so don’t wory too much.
your footwork should work automatikally, you doesn’t even have to think about your foot. you should check not only your foot more you should check you are synchronously with the lady. good news, if your lady does styling her tempo is probably right, so you don’t have to check often.
telling her “she has nice shoes” will give you a littele bonus :)

    • DEVILOFDARKNESS 5:56 am on April 8, 2009Permalink | Reply

Don’t worry. I never mean to “steal” your favourite girl.
What was the “little bonus” you said? Does it have a financial value? (if yes, how much? I don’t have much money now, therefore, I wanna know.):)):-S

      • jovi 6:41 am on April 8, 2009Permalink | Reply

oh yes, it has financial value :)
my friends were discussing that productivity increases compared to 1900. theoretically people should have more wealth with less work, but it is vice versa :( nobody knows why.
we decided an old shool currency, called hadnshake(you know, this think bevore money) surprisingly for my friends and me it works better than the money thing.
you can assign a price to the “little bonus” but i think to enjoy it is more worth. :)

:( Will she spin crazilly in order to sample me after I compliment her shoes? I’m so afraid!
