    Hello fellow salseros and bachateros!

Here’s a a compilation of a bachata choreography by Juan Ruiz and Samantha. I tried a different approach on the video, instead of recording just “a performance”, I jointed together various performances even our training sessions to make it look more like a music video

Enjoy the bachata moderna performance and comments are welcome!

Can someone tell me the name of this song and maybe the artist name. If you can’t name the song can someone spell out some lyrics in English so that I can try and download it from iTunes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlUKv2Mnt_w&feature=related . The song starts at 1:42 into the video.

    Hi guys!

Here’s my latest freestyle/demo of Bachata Moderna in Sydney, Australia.

I know some people won’t like it as Bachata Moderna is more showy than the traditional Bachata. But, I’m in a quest to push Bachata and take it to next level, as it has happen that many dancers, we learnt the basics of bachata and then they feel that that’s it in Bachata, no need to take more classes or learn more (that happened to me too).

Bachata Moderna is based on the Bachata traditional (1, 2, 3 and hip) and the close connection, but it adds new fundamentals to the dance (Cross on1, on2, on3, cross over, About turn, exit on1). This fundamentals helps you to take your bachata to the next level and create a lot of more combinations and moves.

I’m open for comments, suggestions, after all, we all are in this together, we all love dancing.

Went and saw Wilson Castro and Amanda Hawley in York, UK a while back – both incredible dancers!
Does anyone have any idea what track they’re dancing to here?

It’s been bugging me for a while… Such a great bachata track!

The audio is very fuzzy on here but I’m pretty sure I heard that “Y yo!” catchphrase in there which would mean its a song by Yoskar Sarante. Hope it helps.

You are a legend. It sounds very much like “No Te Detengas” by Yoskar Sarante so I’ll go with that! Thank you very much!

how would one learn bachata and merengue? Are there any good resources on the web or any dvds that i should buy that would help me? The problem is the clubs i go to in charlotte area many time play bachata or merengue 75% of the time. In order to not get bored I need to dance those two dances. Also are there dvds for beginner – intermediate salsa. I can do the basic steps and cross body leads without any problems. I need to add some more steps to my salsa repetoire. I like anthony’s videos and many girls think my level has gone up significantly when i do them on the dance floor. I wish there was a dvd of videos like these. I haven’t bought any dvds for dancing so I am not sure what to get. I think one for shines might be good. any suggestions?

Bachata needs a class, for merengue you can use youtube ;) .

    • donv69 1:14 pm on January 12, 2009Permalink | Reply

Agreed. You can take some of your salsa and bachata moves to Merengue. Merengue is easy to learn from Youtube.

Bachata is okay to learn once you know the basic steps. But yeah, a class is definitely required for it.

i’ve learned merengue through youtube and friends. don’t be shy to simply ask some guys and girls to come over and have a lil dance session , it’s something that takes time and love for it, as for bachata u could learn the basics through youtube i suppose but watch those vids that are of random ppl dancing it and recording it, the online lessons are too proper and more for professional dancers, , i recommend a class and friends to show u some moves, don’t be embarrassed to learn dances from other cultures, that’s great actually

    Bachata moderna workshop footage.

Bachata moderna is not only the fusion of various styles into the bachata rhythm and beat. Bachata moderna is based on the crosses steps: cross on 1, cross on 2, cross on 3 and cross over, besides the bachata traditional steps (1,2,3 and hip/tap)

I know some people don’t like bachata moderna because they prefer the traditional style bachata, but this new style is danced together with the bachata traditional.

Bachata moderna is great for dancing urban latin bachatas songs.

Have a look, i hope you guys like it.

I’m still not a fan of bachata moderna, but looks like I will have to learn it, because more and more people are dancing it, sheeesh :)

i do think that there has to be room for everything. i like the traditional/original/dominican/(whatever you wanna call it) style of bachata better. can’t dance it though i need more practice… after being reborn in r. d. …of course..
what i really like about traditional is that it gives you more room for improv. it challenges you to keeping up with the footwork and the beat… it can’t be teached. just learned. and as in every good learning process the best has to come out from oneself.

Hi guys, watch this bachata moderna workshop by Juan and Samantha from Bachateros Australia.

This is a social dance at a club.

Bachata Moderna is a combination of various dance styles into the traditional bachata step. Bachata Moderna is best danced to Urban Latin Bachata music, like 4Ever, Mojito Project, Opalo, Toque D Keda, etc.

Nah, they do this all the time in clubs in Poland. I really don’t like it – original bachata is about senses, sex. This one is more like ballroom rumba comparing to cuban rumba. Keep the sex in bachata, not running around dancefloor in something what will never be a tango. Looks ridiculous to me.

Too much like Zouk. I second SalseroWannaBe. They’re good, but I don’t like it. That’s what Salsa is there for.

And the funniest parts are them walking backward and forward. They look idiotic – just doesn’t fits the music.

I think this new flavor of bachata is great! there is so many new things you can do with the dance.

It is interesting that bachata is going through the same evolution as salsa did in the 90′s. In the early 90′s, people only danced the colombian and cuban salsa. There was no technicalities, just feel the music and the bit. When the linear style came, people were apprehensive to it and started saying that that is not salsa, it’s more like a ballroom dance! Look at it now… the linear salsa (on1, on2) is the most popular salsa style.

Bachata is evolving as well, we can either stay in the past and hope it won’t change, or we can embrace the dance and push it forward to the future.

I think i became to philosophical now, but I would love to hear your thoughts…

    • donv69 11:16 am on November 6, 2008Permalink | Reply

@Juan: I understand what you’re saying. But Bachata already has all the turns and tricks that Salsa has. The difference is that it’s done with side steps, is more intimate and slower.

You obviously can’t do whip turns in Bachata. But you could do the sombrero.

In the early 90′s people only danced colombian and cuban? Where?
