For those who missed it or have never watched the show America’s Got Talent, the 3rd place Salsa World Champions in the on2 division, Junior and Emily from San Diego, performed their routine on the TV show. They received outstanding reviews from the judges and the audience. Here at Addicted2Salsa we wish them the best of luck on winning the one million dollars. Hopefully they’ll win it as fast as Emily spins because the strength of the dollar is dwindling.
A lot of us from San Diego will be attending the 2008 Las Vegas Salsa Congress. It should be a very fun weekend with some good performances (even if it is only two days). If you are from Las Vegas and have never attended a salsa congress, I highly encourage you to attend and support your salsa venues. Las Vegas used to be the home of the World Salsa Championships hosted by ESPN, before it was moved to Orlando. If you decide to attend, stop by and say hi to some of our famous San Diego salsa scene dancers- the Majesty Ladies, Majesty in Motion Pro Team, Positive Energy, and Juan and Susie. I’m sure Las Vegas salseros can party harder in Sin City than in Los Angeles!
I was going over the other salsa news sites to get informed about upcoming events and saw the latest episode of the Salsa Crazy Dance News Videocast. They have named us ‘Website of the Week’ for the July 4th, 2008 edition. I am really happy to have received such great praise from another prominent salsa website. The “Website of the Week” sections starts at 3:15 into the show.
Thanks to SalsaCrazy for their hard work to also make salsa information accessible to the rest of the world.
We have just finished relaunching the salsapodcast.org website to make it easier for everyone to view and download all the current and future episodes of the #1 Free Salsa Video Lesson podcast. With this new website, you should be able to view the videos in higher quality (even the old ones), in fullscreen and you should be able to directly download all the videos to your desktop. This should help make salsa dancing more accessible to everyone around the world.
I will be adding features for people to leave comments on any video and to ask questions about any specific moves. If you see some other feature that would make the website even better or easier to use - please don’t hesitate to send your feedback.
I’m sure you have now figured out why I have been ‘quiet’ for the past few months. I’d like to thank Julie for running addicted2salsa and answering emails while I was locked in the “dungeon” working. We will start working on new episodes for the fall soon.
YouTube finally made public the new features we had been testing a few weeks ago: Annotations. I believe this feature adds a tremendous amount of value to dancers viewing salsa videos.
Now, after we upload a video, we can provide additional points of information such as song name being heard, extra salsa dance tips, and my personal comments. I have tried it out on a few videos, such as the Complex Salsa Dance Move.
If you can, watch the video again on the YouTube page and let me know what you think of the annotations feature - and any ideas on how we could use this feature to improve our videos.
Since we added our first salsa dance videos on YouTube, there have been various questions and mistakes (specifically the earlier ones) and I plan to correct those while providing some additional valuable tips. So who knows - you might find something new in those old videos! Enjoy!
I finally started recovering from our trip to the 10th Annual Los Angeles Salsa Congress. While the event gets various mixed reviews this year, one workshop session I personally enjoyed was by the famous pair, the on2 World Salsa Champions: Oliver and Luda. For those who may not have known about their amazing dance skills, I posted a video below of, what I consider one of their best choreographies. They have won first place every year since 2005 at the World Salsa Championships. This performance shows how sharp yet smooth technical skill, amazing musicality in choreography and their ability to inspire future performers. The Australia salsa scene is lucky to have this amazing pair.
While answering a few basic cha-cha dance questions in the forums, I found a great video that helped illustrate how you can lead different styled cross-body leads in cha-cha (where you can skip the cha-cha step). You can always stick to the basic in doing the cha-cha step in place while performing a CBL, but after a while, that gets pretty boring (yawn!).
After you master the cha-cha step (you can do it without thinking), you can add creativity by modify your cha-cha steps and body movement in a CBL move. Remember, you can always NOT perform the cha-cha step, however, that requires you to have great timing so that: 1) you never throw your partner off time AND 2) you can easily get back in sync with the music. To be more clear (so I don’t get into trouble), while you may have modified your steps to not perform the cha-cha-cha to the music, the steps you replace them with must still be in sync with the music.
Here below is a clip from a couple social dancing cha-cha at the Puerto Rico salsa congress. It should provide more inspiration and creativity for those searching…
