How to do Salsa Dips: the way the ladies like it

Nice dip

Since we have had several requests lately for instruction on dips, I though I would provide some female perspective.  I asked some fellow salseras, and this is what I found.

Our favorite kind of dip is a small one at the end of a song.  By small, I mean the guys bring us into dipping position and we lean back slightly, but it looks more like a perpendicular hug, as seen in the picture to the left.  This is an elegant ending to a nice dance.

Our least favorite kind of dip ……..

DANCE MACHINE: New Dance Show on ABC!

On Friday, June 27th a new dance show premieres on ABC!  It’s called Dance Machine, and we’ll get to watch six contestants break out their favorite dance moves, trying to make their way to the top.  A prize of $100,000 is up for grabs, plus the title of “Dance Machine”.

Who are the contestants, you ask?  Are they ’stars’, trying to quickly learn a new ballroom dance? No. The fascinating part of this show is that we are watching regular people just do what they love to do on the dance floor.

The host is Jason Kennedy, who you may recognize from E! Entertainment.  Tune in to abc on Friday, June 27th at 7/8c for the season premiere of Dance Machine!

Salsa Artist of the Week: Cheo Feliciano

Salsa Biography : Cheo FelicianoAt just 20 years old, the “bandboy” for Tito Rodriguez was invited to the stage to sing.  With the songs “Changó tá vení” and Barito”, he left the crowd of all of New York’s best dancers in awe.  This is how José “Cheo” Feliciano Vega first became known publicly, though his musical development had been long in progress.  He began in a school of music in Puerto Rico, and then continued to study music when his family moved to New York in 1952.  Inspired by artists like Frank “Machito” Mon Rivera, Tito Puente, and Tito Rodriguez, Cheo took a special interest in the percussion instruments, though he would eventually be most famous for his voice.

Cheo went on to join Joe Cuba’s sextet.  With the sextet for a decade, Cheo sung many of the sextet’s now famous songs, such as “Salsa y bembé”, “Callejero”, “Cachondea”, “A las seis”, “El ratón” (see below), and “el pito”, which was used in a Coca Cola ad.

2008 Mayan World Salsa Competition Results

Club Mayan results are in!  Though they are not posted on the Mayan website yet, the Jamaican Salsero Blog has posted the information along with a review of the competition from the competitor’s perspective.  The 13th Annual Mayan World Salsa Competition took place over the last two weeks, with professional finals this past Saturday.

The winners were David Nieto and Charlene Rose, followed by Raul Santiago and Sergia Anderson in 2nd place, and Christian Oviedo and Diana Sanchez in 3rd.  Other well known dancers that didn’t make it to the top include Liz Lira with Luis Aguilar, who came in 4th place, and Isidro Corona and Sheila Zepeda (Bay area favorites), who have done quite well in Albert Torres’ World Salsa Championships.

Some have criticized the Mayan Competition, claiming that this once revered contest that determined the true greats has since been corrupted and is even being replaced by the World Salsa Championships (Albert Torres Productions).  The main complaint is that the Mayan is “an LA competition“, meaning that in order to win, one must be from Los Angeles. This is evidenced by the fact that the International category is defined as “outside of California” (though even in the International warm-up dance, some of the internationals hailed from as far as San Francisco- see more info on the video below).

Despite criticisms, many of the best On1 dancers still compete in this competition every year. This year, there were some surprises.  Couples like Isidro and Sheila, who won the semifinal round in the world championships, only placed 9th in the Mayan competition.  The winners of the Mayan competition, David and Charlene, placed 4th in the semi-finals and 3rd in the finals of the world competition.  Some of the discrepancies are no doubt due to differences between individual performances, but it is interesting to compare the two competitions.  The results of the 2007 World Salsa Championships are below; you can judge for yourself once the Mayan videos are posted.

Details of placing aside, the quality of dancing is exceptional in this competition.  Check out the Mayan website to watch the semifinal rounds videos in both pro and am categories.

Dancing With The Stars Season Finale

This is an exciting week in dance competitions!  Not only will Addicted2Salsa contest finalists be chosen (last minute entries accepted until midnight tonight!), Dancing With The Stars narrows down to the very last couple as well.  Anthony and I have not only followed the show this season, we got the chance to attend a recording of one of the shows.  It was an exciting experience to see the behind the scenes action, and watch the dancers up close.  The dance moves were even more impressive in person, as were the costumes, make-up and tans.  We watched Kristi, Marissa, Cristián, Jason and Shannon dance their way to the top.  Since then, Shannon and Marissa have been eliminated, but this week the winner will be decided!  Check out the season finale tonight (Monday), 8/7c and Tuesday 9/8c for the results show on abc.  The only stars remaining are Kristi-the Olympic champion figure skater, Cristián-the international film star, and Jason-NFL man of the year: who is your favorite dancer? Let us know in the forums!
