Is It Safe to Salsa Dance in Prison? [UK]

salsa_breakNow we’ve heard it all..

The prisoners and guards at Kirkham jail near Preston, Lancs (UK) are treated to salsa dance lessons on Wednesdays by an another inmate who is an expert salsa instructor. According to the article, they see this as a form to reduce the issues with drugs and mobile phones inside of the facility. While I’ll let you provide your opinions below, we wonder if they would like a copy of our dance lesson videos?

Roof-Top Dancing in America : West Side Story

West Side Story : AmericaThis weekend I took some time to revisit the great musical called “West Side Story“. For those who have not seen the play or movie, its plot is very similar to “Romeo and Juliet” except placed in the era of the mid-1950s during which time there was a period of migration from Puerto Rico to New York. The two lovers in the film are not only separated by race, but also by the gang violence between two feuding groups: The Sharks and The Jets. Given the popular social discussion of foreigners and immigration nowadays, I find this particular musical performance interesting as it highlights the fact that history always repeats itself and is often expressed through great art forms! For those who watch “So You Think You Can Dance“, you will notice that this was the choreography used in the audition process during what is called “Vegas Week”.

Review of Salsa Dance Shoes for Men

comfortable_salsa_dance_shoes_menIn the large spectrum of dance shoes, there is very little written about the variety of options available to men. Now that I have gone through enough salsa dance shoe phases, it is time to provide my experience and mini-reviews of the dance shoes I have worn throughout my salsa lifetime.

If you have been a long time fan of the addicted2salsa podcast, you may have noticed the original shoes that I wore for the series. Those days are gone, and so are those shoes that were given the famous name, ‘salsa boots’. Here I present an overview of my dance shoe evolution throughout different stages of my salsa life.

While I know beginners are sometimes preoccupied with having a good set of dance shoes since they will help their ‘salsa game’ – most of these shoes only add an incremental amount of performance enhancement compared to proper training and execution of footwork and patterns. Shoes are no replacement for real salsa dance practice.

This is the list of shoes I will be comparing in order of how I bought and used them:

  1. The Street Shoes
  2. The Bloch Sneakers
  3. The Jazz Shoes
  4. The Latin Ballroom Shoes
  5. The Practice Sneakers
  6. The “Pointy” Shoes
  7. The Modern Suede Shoe

7 Great Tips to Improve Balance while Dancing

Achieving balance in dance

Perhaps the most difficult part of learning to dance for ladies is achieving steady balance. Like most skills, balance takes time and practice to achieve, but here are some ways to speed up the process.

Touch up your timing

Once you have a solid understanding of salsa timing, and begin to memorize which foot corresponds with which beat, you will become much more steady on the dance floor. If we have a poor understanding of timing, then we compensate as we follow by pausing or shuffling steps, which brings us off balance.

Focus on footwork

You can improve timing and balance by practicing footwork on your own (plus it’s a great work out). With a nice slow song, concentrate on marking your footwork with the beats in the music. Footwork also forces us to maintain our own balance, without a lead for support. Continue reading ’7 Great Tips to Improve Balance while Dancing’
