2008 New Salsa Salsa Congress Review

New York Salsa Congress

New York Salsa Congress

I know it is long overdue. My review of the New York Salsa Congress is finally up. In fact, it was mostly done but I was procrastinating.  Choco, the organizer of the congress, posted a new promo video on facebook of the Congress and guess whose funny face appears at the end!

Review, promo video and photos of the 2008 New York Salsa Congress.

Dancing in Olympics Women’s Gymnastics

In case you missed the women’s all around gymnastics finals in the Olympics, here is a taste of the Gold and Silver American medal winners’ routines.  Nastia Liuken ended up with the gold medal, and Shawn Johnson with silver- the decisive moment was during the floor exercises.  These are beautiful examples of not only gymnastics, but also very impressive dancing.  The technique is perfect, and musicality in these routines is also wonderful.  And to think we complain about getting dizzy in salsa spins….I can’t imagine doing tumbling passes then show control and balance.  Enjoy watching these talented athletes/artists!

Salsa Dance 34 : Salsa at the Disco

Another quick episode of addicted2salsa podcast. Today we show you how to perform the famous “Salsa Disco” dance move using different amounts of spin. A lot of dancers get caught up in the fact about knowing very little moves, but in reality, by adding doubles and triples in their current salsa dance combination - they become almost new.

Episode 5 : Salsa At The Disco

Episode 5 : Salsa At The Disco

There is a little known fact to most salsa dance beginners that when follows learn to spin well, they’ll fall in love with it. Follows love a challenge, and if you can start leading double and triple spins well - you should do so. They will find you more fun to dance with because you make it more challenging. For ladies who would like to improve their spinning, you may want to check out these salsa tip articles on spinning.

Note: For the ‘Disco’ move, pointing like John Travolta is optional.

[Updated] I have added annotations to the YouTube version to showcase how dancing On2 fits better with the cues/hits in the music. Hopefully this helps a few of you out there see how dancing on On2 timing helps makes moves fit better with the instruments of a song: Salsa At the Disco - YouTube with Annotations . This is for informational purposes as always (no mean emails please :-) ).

The song used in the video is : Consolacion by Roberto Roena y Su Apollo Sound

How India fuses Salsa with Hindi Pop

I do not think I ever posted this old music video that was debuted at the San Francisco Salsa Congress a few years back. It is basically a mixture of ’salsa’ (note the quotation marks), and what is called ‘Hindi Pop‘. It is from an artist named Giju, whose music video features a few famous dancers from the Bay Area and San Diego.

My Hindi is a bit rusty (joking), therefore I will leave it up to our fellow visitors from India who love and enjoy salsa to tell us what this song is about. Interesting to see how salsa music becomes fused with other styles. I wonder what salsa dancer or artist will be the first to fuse Bhangra with salsa. Maybe create the first Bollywood/Salsa routine - if they haven’t already.

Why THEY ARE the On2 World Salsa Champions since 2006

I finally started recovering from our trip to the 10th Annual Los Angeles Salsa Congress. While the event gets various mixed reviews this year, one workshop session I personally enjoyed was by the famous pair, the on2 World Salsa Champions: Oliver and Luda. For those who may not have known about their amazing dance skills, I posted a video below of, what I consider one of their best choreographies. They have won first place every year since 2005 at the World Salsa Championships. This performance shows how sharp yet smooth technical skill, amazing musicality in choreography and their ability to inspire future performers. The Australia salsa scene is lucky to have this amazing pair.
