Since this past weekend was the 8th annual San Francisco Salsa Congress, we thought we’d share some videos from everybody’s favorite event: the Jack and Jill! In this event, dancers are paired up randomly with the goal of entertaining the crowd with the best dancing and funniest moves. In this round, especially the Masters, dancers typically imitate others who danced earlier or have some sort of joke within their dance. Last year, it was dancing while talking on cell phones – this year, the theme seems to be taking off shirts. Here are some of the favorites. Thanks to Kristina Quevedo Video Productions for taking the videos below. If you have any other videos from the 2009 San Francisco Salsa Congress – feel free to post them in our comments below. The salsa videos are after the break!
No matter which political group you may affiliate yourself with, you have to give major ‘props’ to our President for being able to get down with some Latin music, dancing and partying. He will probably be one of the most rhythmically skilled Presidents we’ve had in forever. Make sure you watch the second video: you can see Marc Anthony dance with Jennifer Lopez, the President dancing with his daugther and later, his daugther playing the timbales. Here’s to hoping they’ll visit our website someday! The videos are after the break.
This advanced salsa dance video lesson will teach you how to perform short but intricate pattern that we call the cross body lead flick lock combo. It is based on the original DPS lock combo from one of our “old school” salsa dance episodes, but made more advanced by creating a DPS lock with a hand flick after a cross body lead. Please be careful with this move as it is advanced and requires good timing to not hurt your dance partner.
If you watched the PBS special of “Latin Music USA” you must have seen the video snippet below. This particular section had a particular effect on me when I watched it. It is Ruben Blades and Willie Colón rehearsing one of Blades first songs with Fania Records called “El Cazanguero”. It was great to see a young Ruben Blades singing with amazingly clear vocals and eloquent lyrics while Colón was directing the band. For those who haven’t seen the documentary – hopefully this video will influence you to watch it. This is a prime example of artists having truly mastered their craft and created something that withstands the test of time. The classics never die.
Another salsa dance video lesson to help keep you engaged in salsa dancing at the night club or salsa socials. This is a very simple move comes out of a open break into a ladies’ right turn and then goes into a blind rainbow move. The lead and the follow end up back-to-back, from where you turn and go into a reverse salsa wrap or dance cuddle. Afterwards, Julie will show you some good fashion Ladies’ Styling for salsa dancing.
In this addicted2salsa salsa dance video lesson we teach you the a very basic salsa dance hand flick coming out of a “hammerlocked” cross body lead. We also provide a quick salsa leg flick to add some additional men’s styling to the salsa dance move. We consider this an intermediate move, so please be careful at the club trying to pull this off, since doing it without proper timing and technique, it could hurt your partner. Keep dancing!
