For a few months now, the FANIA Records salsa music website had been down with a ‘Coming Soon in Fall of 2009′ text. Today, a brand new website has flourished to show salsa music in all of its glory! Given everything we have learn from the history of FANIA Records from the PBS Special: Latin Music USA, it is great to see they are back showcasing all the great salsa music from the era plus more! Now you can purchase individual salsa songs, categorized by era, read salsa artist bios, and subscribe to a salsa music podcast on their website. In addition, they let also have a 24-hour FANIA salsa music radio station!
Hopefully someday they’ll be happy enough to sponsor our salsa podcast!

As we get closer to the new season of addicted2salsa starting in september we’d like to make a quick announcement. To your surprise, addicted2salsa is currently run by Julie and I (Anthony) from our apartment and from our own budget and spare time. We are glad to provide all of our addicted2salsa dance video lessons free of charge for anyone to learn. However, that does not mean that they are free for us to make. We have a LOT of expenses that come out of our own pocket such as: running a website, costs of renting a studio to film, video equipment, editing software, site bandwidth, the coffee to keep myself awake while I work on the site at 1:00am … the list goes on and on. Therefore, we appreciate any monetary contributions you are willing to provide us. Every little bit helps us teach the current and future generations of salsa dancers. Your contributions go directly to our costs, and helps us grow the website to offer new engaging content and services. Think of it as if you were buying us a cup of coffee !
We are currently looking to make some new equipment purchases for our video work (including a new computer). We believe that if every fan contributed at least $1.00 we can meet our goal by August 30th, 2009 (addicted2salsa’s 4 year anniversary!). By clicking on the chip-in box to the left, you can contribute any amount securely through Paypal (credit cards accepted) ! Thanks you all for your ongoing support of this website – we could not do this without loyal fans as yourselves!
For those wondering, we will start publishing the new “season” of salsa dance episodes starting in September. Julie and I are trying to catch up to our real non-salsa day jobs.
Here at addicted2salsa, we try (when we can) to contribute salsa news, videos and information that can hopefully improve your overall salsa dancing and social lifestyle. We are glad to see many others sharing their passion and enthusiasm for salsa dancing and music on the internet. This weekend I found a good blog that DJDoubleC posted in our social site: the very recent Salsa-Musicality blog . I was very enthusiastic and impressed with the wealth of information that this author has posted. From his description, he wanted to become a better dancer by learning how to play the instrument, probably because it helps people find the salsa dance beat:
“I know about Salsa, Percussion, and how to mix the two! Here are my thoughts and findings related to salsa, salsa dancing, percussion, and musicality. After spending years and years looking like “just another gringo!”, I decided to learn how to dance properly. How did I do it? I learned percussion, and then it all just “clicked”!” – Salsa Musicality Blog
The author takes care in teaching you a few basics on reading music and timing for instruments with visuals. I find this an excellent beginner resource for those wanting to dive deeper into the structure of salsa music. I hope that he continues to share his knowledge with us so that everyone in the world salsa community benefits.
Here are a few of the articles that I really enjoyed and are must read by ALL salsa dancers:
- Musical Notation (great starter for absolute beginners)
- How different instruments affect you
- Different types of Latin Music
- How to play the Mambo Cowbell

Imagine yourself in that salsa club for the first time: the music is loud, upbeat and with great energy and everyone is dressed in a fashionable way. As you walk in, you approach the dance floor. Here is when you are truly introduced to the world of salsa. You stare at the dancers as you see dancing, executing all these amazing turns; how they dance with passion, the sexiness, and then again, the turns! The never-ending, fun turn!!
Sound like your experience? It was definitely mine, so right away I knew I had to learn how to dance.
Once I started dancing, the better I saw myself dancing, the more I noticed that some girls did not enjoy dancing with me or they’d just flat out say no every time I asked them to dance. Why? After all I was doing all the turns and dips, the sexy patterns, the fun stuff – you know, the works.
It was after some time that I truly learned what makes a guy a great dancer:
“ When you dance salsa, you don’t make the girl do the turns, you guide her”.
This observation alone is very general, but it opens the door to help you understand dancing in a new way. Leading is the key to being a great dancer. Let’s dive in to see how you can improve the way you play your role on the dance floor as a leader.
Here are my tips:

Salsa Dancing. What is it that makes it popular today? Why is it that people who salsa seems to be happier, in better shape and in a better mood compared to others? From these questions we see that there are two major roles dancing salsa plays in people’s lives: they are healthier and they have a great social life.
We all know, having heard or read somewhere, about the health benefits of dancing. Here are some of the more prominent ones to be considered:
- It’s a great cardio activity that is fun; it’s a lot easier to spend three hours dancing than it is to spend forty five minutes on the treadmill.
- You burn 450 calories per hour while dancing. Isn’t that amazing?
- Your balance and posture improves.
- You loose weight.
- Your flexibility increases.
- It helps develop better circulation.
- You will have better coordination.
- You gain long-lasting energy as your metabolism increases.
- It helps you work through or reduce other major health problems (e.g., depression).

So if these reasons alone aren’t enough to understand why people pick up salsa dancing, let’s analyze the social aspect of it. We all come from different walks of life; some better than others, but for the most part the one thing people mutually seek is the feeling of being important, of having a purpose and belonging somewhere (e.g., to a community or group of people with common interests or goals). That is where dancing comes in: the means to a better end, building confidence and a sense of self that will drastically improve your quality of life. So how does salsa dancing help fulfill this ultimate goal?
Here it goes: Salsa dancing…

There are two snapshots of our beloved Magnita. Like always, she manages to catch everyone’s attention. Lastly, yours truly and Scarlet Mambo were also quoted.
