The Oliver Salsa Turn

Salsa Dancing LessonsIn this salsa dance lesson video, Anthony Persaud and Julie Merrill (addicted2salsa) teach you the reverse “around the world” salsa dancing move combination. This move was taught by one of our favorite salsa dancers from Australia, Oliver Pineda. Oliver, and his partner Luda, have been salsa dance champions at the World Salsa Dance Championships several years in a row in the On2 division. If you ever get an opportunity to take one of their Latin dance workshops, we highly recommend it. Check out their site @http://www.latinmotion.com.au/

Here is a great example on how amazing these dancers are:

Salsa Dance Footwork for Beginners

Salsa Dance Footwork for BeginnersThis is part one of a short series of salsa dance instructional videos to encourage you to incorporate salsa footwork and Latin dance shines in your social dancing. Most beginners will compose their dance in a never ending series of turn patterns. This should help you get started on adding simple footwork dance segments to your dancing so you can allow the lady to enjoy herself by styling on her own.

And as a big thank you to our loyal salsa dance viewers, our sponsor, Gabellini Dance Shoes, has decided to offer Addicted2Salsa members a $10 discount on your next order of salsa dance shoes! Just use the COUPON CODE: A2S10. [Offer Expired]

Find the Salsa Dance Beat Exercise Soundtrack

I am very happy to have found out that interest in learning to dance on2 (NY/PR) timing has started becoming very popular on addicted2salsa.com. To help everyone become more familiar with the clave and the VERY important conga slap, I have edited the original salsa clave track I created in Garageband for Episode 25 : Finding the Salsa Beat and modified it for an easier learning experience. This should help everyone make it part of their daily schedule to play the track at least 3 times a day while they do some other task. Doing this will allow your brain to sink-in that conga beat and rhythm subconsciously - so that it starts becoming easily recognizable by your ears.

At first, I recommend forgetting about the clave when listening to the soundtrack. Focus on the ‘tu-ku (small pause) PA!’ (conga) sound first. The ‘tu-ku’ sound happens on the 8-AND and 4-AND counts. That ‘PA’ sound are your 2’s and 6’s when dancing on2.

I have loaded the waveform of the track and added some cue markers for you to understand what is happening in the beat. You can do the same with any audio editing program, for example, the free Audacity. Please remember that this is not a perfect graph of the waveform, but it is very accurate if you focus your attention on the peak points. (No noise reduction or normalizing was done).

Salsa Dance Lesson : Salsa at the Disco

Episode 5 : Salsa At The DiscoAnother quick episode of addicted2salsa podcast. Today we show you how to perform the famous “Salsa Disco” dance move using different amounts of spin. A lot of dancers get caught up in the fact about knowing very little moves, but in reality, by adding doubles and triples in their current salsa dance combination – they become almost new.

There is a little known fact to most salsa dance beginners that when follows learn to spin well, they’ll fall in love with it. Follows love a challenge, and if you can start leading double and triple spins well – you should do so. They will find you more fun to dance with because you make it more challenging. For ladies who would like to improve their spinning, you may want to check out these salsa tip articles on spinning.

Note: For the ‘Disco’ move, pointing like John Travolta is optional.

[Updated] I have added annotations to the YouTube version to showcase how dancing On2 fits better with the cues/hits in the music. Hopefully this helps a few of you out there see how dancing on On2 timing helps makes moves fit better with the instruments of a song: Salsa At the Disco – YouTube with Annotations . This is for informational purposes as always (no mean emails please :-) ).

Sakara Dance Company in San Diego : First Impressions

San Diego is a young salsa city. It is not as mature as San Francisco, Los Angeles or (even close) New York in terms of the salsa community. However, a lot of progress has been made over this last year. We have had Junior and Emily, Mambo2Salsa by Angel and Tulane, and Serena Cuevas’ team (yet to be nicknamed and announced) begin to grow in San Diego.Today, a new dance team as come to San Diego: Sakara (www.sakara.us). The uniqueness of this dance team is the incorporation of enormous amounts of isolated body motions in their routine and style – which is a refresher to having to do zillion of patterns. Their tag-line: ‘fluidity of movement’. It is a breath of fresh air. .. Continue reading ‘Sakara Dance Company in San Diego : First Impressions’

Santo Rico Salsa Routine : Clasiqueando

This is one of my FAVORITE videos–Santo Rico is amazing. I had the pleasure of taking a class with them in NY in August, and remain in total awe of the skill of these dancers. The video is of one of their rehearsals, and we see not only some of the fastest spins out there, but also some great body movement. Enjoy!!!
